MURANG’A, Kenya – In a classic David-vs-Goliath encounter, Murang’a SEAL pulled off the upset of the season on Thursday afternoon, defeating high-flying Kenya Police FC 1-0 at a packed St. Sebastian Stadium.
Captain Joseph Irungu Waithera was the hero of the day, netting a clinical 15th-minute goal that proved to be the difference. The victory not only handed Murang’a SEAL three vital points but also threw a massive spanner into the works of the Kenya Premier League (KPL) title race.
The Breakthrough
Coming into the match as heavy underdogs against a Police side that has dominated the league’s upper echelons this season, the hosts showed no fear. The decisive moment arrived early in the first half when Francis Memusi delivered a “beautiful” pass into the area, finding Irungu. The Gor Mahia Factor: Record champions Gor Mahia remain the biggest beneficiaries of this result, staying top of the league with 23 points. In the other KPL match, Kariobangi Sharks defeated visiting Bidco Utd 1-0 at Kasarani Annext. Humphrey Oroko scored the all-important goal.
