MURANG’A, Kenya – In a classic David-vs-Goliath encounter, Murang’a SEAL pulled off the upset of the season on Thursday afternoon, defeating high-flying Kenya Police FC 1-0 at a packed St. Sebastian Stadium.

Captain Joseph Irungu Waithera was the hero of the day, netting a clinical 15th-minute goal that proved to be the difference. The victory not only handed Murang’a SEAL three vital points but also threw a massive spanner into the works of the Kenya Premier League (KPL) title race.

The Breakthrough
Coming into the match as heavy underdogs against a Police side that has dominated the league’s upper echelons this season, the hosts showed no fear. The decisive moment arrived early in the first half when Francis Memusi delivered a “beautiful” pass into the area, finding Irungu. The skipper made no mistake, firing home to send the home fans into a frenzy.

Despite a star-studded lineup, Kenya Police struggled to break down a resilient Murang’a defense that seemed determined to end their recent winless streak.

The “Law Enforcers” threw everything forward in the closing stages, but the SEALs held firm to secure their most significant win of the campaign.

The result has immediate and dramatic effects on both ends of the KPL log:
Murang’a SEAL: With this win, they move to 15 points, successfully leaping out of the relegation dogfight to occupy the 12th position. It provides much-needed breathing room for the home side.

Kenya Police FC: The loss is a bitter pill for the visitors as they remain stuck in 4th place on 21 points. More importantly, they missed a golden opportunity to leapfrog to the top of the table.

The Gor Mahia Factor: Record champions Gor Mahia remain the biggest beneficiaries of this result, staying top of the league with 23 points. In the other KPL match, Kariobangi Sharks defeated visiting Bidco Utd 1-0 at Kasarani Annext. Humphrey Oroko scored the all-important goal.
