Ranked 117th in the world, Sudan produced the “smash-and-grab” result of the tournament, defeating Equatorial Guinea 1-0 in Casablanca.
A 74th-minute own goal by Saul Coco was the difference, putting the Desert Falcons in a prime position to advance from Group E.
The Reaction:
Sudan’s Mohamed Eisa emphasized that their performance was fueled by the turmoil in their home country. “We are not just playing football; we are playing for the people of Sudan who are going through a difficult time. This win gives us belief.”
Equatorial Guinea’s camp was left frustrated, with coach Juan Micha admitting his side dominated but failed to be clinical. “In football, if you don’t score, you get punished. Now we have to beat Algeria, which is a massive mountain to climb.”
