It was a night of mixed fortunes for Ugandan interest in the Mapinduzi Cup as Azam FC secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Simba SC on Thursday evening, booking their spot in the final at the Amaan Stadium.
While the match was billed as a clash of the Tanzanian giants, Ugandan fans were keeping a close eye on the team sheets.

Lawi’s Header Decides the Tie
In a tightly contested affair that lived up to its “Zanzibar Derby” atmosphere, the deadlock was finally broken in the 74th minute. Defender Lameck Lawi rose highest to meet a well-delivered ball, powering home a header that left the Simba goalkeeper with no chance.
The goal sparked wild celebrations from the Azam bench, leaving Simba with just over a quarter of an hour to save their tournament hopes.

Steven Mukwala: The Uganda Cranes forward was introduced in the 77th minute as Simba threw everything forward in search of an equalizer. Mukwala, who took part in the AFCON with the Uganda Cranes, showed flashes of urgency and clever movement, but the Azam defense remained disciplined, denying him any clear-cut sight of goal.
Bright Anukani: Despite reports of the midfielder being on trials with Simba, Anukani was not named in the matchday squad, leaving fans waiting longer to see if the playmaker will secure a permanent move.
