Five Kenyan Footballers Banned From All Football Activities For Failure to Attend Medical Tests

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) have moved to suspend five high-profile footballers, sending a clear message that administrative negligence will no longer be tolerated in East African football.

The players, including Harambee Stars defender Ronney Onyango and former Gor Mahia star Benson Omala, have been provisionally banned from all football-related activities following what has been described as a “whereabouts failure”—a technical term for failing to be available for mandatory, unannounced medical and doping tests.

The crackdown has hit several top-tier clubs, leaving them without their key assets as the season reaches a critical stage. The affected players are: Ronney Onyango (Gor Mahia / Harambee Stars), Benson Omala (Nairobi United), John Njuguna (Nairobi United), Charles Ouma (Kenya Police FC) and Bonphas Munyasa (KCB).

Additionally, former Bandari FC striker Johanna Mwita has also been named in the recent disciplinary sweep.

While many fans associate “anti-doping” with the use of prohibited substances, these specific bans are the result of “Whereabouts Failures.”

Under international regulations, elite athletes must provide a 60-minute window every day where they can be found for testing.

A ban is typically triggered when an athlete records three “strikes” within a 12-month period.

These strikes include:
Missed Tests: Not being at the location specified during the 60-minute window.

Filing Failures: Failing to update their location on the ADAMS (Anti-Doping Administration & Management System) digital platform.

The suspension is “provisional,” meaning the players must stop playing immediately while their cases are heard. ADAK has warned that any player who defies this order and takes to the pitch will face even harsher penalties, with their official ban period only starting after a final ruling is made.

This is a massive blow for Harambee Stars’ coach Benni McCarthy, who will likely have to plan his upcoming FIFA Series and AFCON qualifier squads without the services of Ronney Onyango, one of the region’s most promising defenders, and striker Benson Omalla.
