The echoes of roaring engines from the recent Mbale Rally have barely faded, but already, the championship battle for the 2026 National Rally Championship (NRC) is igniting with renewed fervor.

At the prestigious Fortebet Real Stars Monthly Awards held today at Najing Restaurant in Kololo, the spotlight shone brightly on Hassan Alwi, who was deservedly crowned the Rally Sports Personality of March. But it was his unwavering declaration that truly set the tone for the season: he is not just competing, he is fighting for this year’s national rally championship.

Alwi’s victory at the 2026 Mbale Rally, where he posted an impressive total time of 01:12:42, was a powerful statement of intent. He outmaneuvered a competitive field, with motorsport veteran Moses Lumala hot on his heels, a testament to Alwi’s exceptional skill and improved form.

This win, however, is more than just a trophy; it represents a potential turning point in a career that has long chased the elusive NRC crown.

The memory of 2018 still lingers for Alwi, a season when he came agonizingly close to championship glory. That year, he battled fiercely, only to lose the title to the formidable “superlady” Suzan Muwonge on the very last stage of the 2018 Oryx Mbale Rally. That heartbreak has undoubtedly fueled a deeper resolve within him.

Today, Alwi spoke with a renewed sense of optimism, attributing the sport’s growing competitiveness to technological advancements. “The sport has become very motivating due to the improved technology like the timing clocks, trackers among others,” he explained.

“This has led to a fair competition and thus pushing us to yearn for wins.” This enhanced fairness, he believes, empowers drivers to push their limits, making every rally a true test of skill and strategy.

With the taste of victory fresh in his mouth, Alwi’s ambitions are clear. “I will continue the year strong with competing in every event on the calendar,” he declared, leaving no doubt about his commitment. His sights are also firmly set on the revered Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally, a flagship event that could be crucial in his quest for the national title.

As the 2026 NRC season unfolds, all eyes will be on Hassan Alwi. Armed with a recent victory, a refined focus, and the lessons learned from past near-misses, he is ready to embark on a compelling redemption arc, determined to finally etch his name as the National Rally Champion.
