The Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) general Secretary Peninah Kabenge has challenged the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) to work towards excellence at the institution. 

Kabenge made  the appeal in her keynote speech during the Seventh AUUS Forum held at the Makerere University of Science and Technology in Mbarara on Thursday at Kihumuro Campus in Mbarara.

Kabenge, the former Uganda Olympic Committee general Secretary  and AUUS president Emeritus noted the Excellence in academics, Excellence in good governance, excellence in facilities, excellence in safeguarding athletes will help in building the future of sports in the country and also build a holistic student.

“Excellence in academics, safeguarding athletes, innovations and government will take sports to another stage that brightens the future of Sports in the country,” Kabenge noted. 

She urged the Universities to not look at investing in  Sports as an expenditure, but look at it as an investment that brings so many returns to the institution.

“Currently there is no university in Uganda investing in sports as a priority yet we must have that investment in sports will strengthen governance and develop good leadership skills that will in the future manage not only sports but the governance,” Kabenge added.

The two-day workshop organised by AUUS  is meant to equip the Sports Tutors, Deans of Students, Students  leaders with knowledge in governance, Sports development and academic excellence. 

The AUUS President George Wagoogo urged University leaders  to invest in sports because sports and academics are not competitors but compliments each other. 

He added that AUUS will continue to engage the University leaders in the  University  and at all levels to make sure that sports is given priority in the universities by improving on budget allocations to sports , establishing good facilities and giving them opportunities to explore their talents.
