Cape Verde’s unforgettable FIFA World Cup adventure came to a heartbreaking end after the African debutants pushed defending champions Argentina to the limit before suffering a dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat in Miami.

The Blue Sharks twice fought back from behind against one of football’s greatest powers and looked destined to force a penalty shootout before a cruel own goal in extra time shattered their dreams.

Argentina struck first through Lionel Messi, whose composed finish gave the holders a first-half advantage. But Cape Verde refused to be overawed and drew level after the break when Deroy Duarte capped off a flowing move with a clinical finish.

With the scores locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the contest moved into extra time, where Lisandro Martinez restored Argentina’s lead almost immediately. Yet Cape Verde once again produced a remarkable response, this time through Sidny Lopes Cabral, whose stunning long-range effort left Emiliano Martinez with no chance and reignited hopes of one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.

As penalties loomed, Argentina found a fortunate winner in the 111th minute. Messi’s dangerous corner caused confusion inside the Cape Verde penalty area before the ball deflected off Diney Borges and into his own net, ending the spirited resistance of the Blue Sharks.

Even after the setback, Cape Verde continued to throw players forward in search of another equaliser, forcing the world champions to defend desperately until the final whistle.

Although their journey ends in the Round of 32, Bubista’s side leaves the tournament with enormous pride. On their first-ever World Cup appearance, they progressed from a difficult group featuring Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia before pushing the defending champions to the brink of elimination.

Cape Verde’s fearless displays, resilience and attacking ambition have made them one of the tournament’s biggest success stories, proving they belong among the world’s elite.

Argentina survived the scare to book a Round of 16 clash against Egypt, but the lasting memory from Miami will be the courage and determination shown by a Cape Verde side that exceeded every expectation.
