The Minister for Youth, Sports and Arts in the Buganda Kingdom, Owek Robert Sserwanga, has officially launched the second edition of the Kabaka’s 33rd Coronation Badminton Championship, with organizers expecting more than 800 participants.

The championship was officially unveiled at Bulange, Mengo, ahead of the tournament scheduled to take place from Saturday, July 17, to Monday, July 19, at the CFK Badminton Academy, Kisasi Arena, Kampala.

The launch ceremony was attended by Owek Robert Sserwanga, Badminton Uganda Chief Executive Officer Simon Mugabi, and several of Uganda’s top badminton players, including F Gladys Mbabazi and Tracy Naluwooza, among others.

Speaking at the launch, Mugabi described the championship as a vital platform for the growth of the sport in Uganda.

“This competition portrays the future of badminton in the country,” Mugabi said.
He revealed that more than 450 players had already registered online, with organizers anticipating the number to increase to over 800 participants through on-site registration.

“We have registered over 450 athletes online, but we expect the numbers to rise to 800 across all categories through venue registration. We thank the Buganda Kingdom for giving us the opportunity to be part of the Kabaka’s Coronation celebrations,” Mugabi noted.

The championship will feature competitions across several categories, including primary schools, secondary schools, universities, professionals, and veterans, making it one of the most inclusive badminton events on Uganda’s sporting calendar.

Owek Sserwanga applauded the growing interest in the tournament and encouraged more players to register while also appealing to sponsors to support the championship.

“From the 410 participants we had last year to the 450 already registered at this stage, I am confident the number will rise to the expected 800. This demonstrates the continued growth of badminton in Uganda. I also call upon sponsors to support this historic championship, which brings together participants of all age groups,” Sserwanga said.

The 33rd Coronation Anniversary celebrations of His Majesty Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II will climax on July 31 with a thanksgiving service at Watoto Church, Bweyogerere.
