Uganda Cranes showcased remarkable resilience on Monday afternoon, fighting back from a goal down to salvage a 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in an international friendly at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Substitute James Bogere was the hero of the day, unleashing a late 89th-minute strike to neutralize Nathanael Mbuku’s 69th-minute opener for the Leopards.

The encounter marked the second meeting between the East and Central African rivals in less than a week at the same venue, following the Cranes’ impressive 2-0 victory over DRC last weekend. James Bogere and Kevin Boateng scored for Uganda.

The opening half was a tightly contested tactical affair, with both technical benches making notable adjustments from their previous clash.

DR Congo controlled larger spells of possession early on, pressing high to breach the Ugandan backline. However, the Cranes held firm, relying on disciplined defending and sharp counter-attacks to keep the Leopards at bay heading into the interval.

The breakthrough finally came in the 69th minute when DR Congo’s Nathanael Mbuku grabbed the opportunity and gave the Leopards a deserved 1-0 lead.

Refusing to go down without a fight, Uganda upped the intensity in the closing stages. The persistence paid off just one minute before full-time when James Bogere picked unleashed a stunning strike that left the Congolese goalkeeper with no chance, restoring parity and sealing a hard-fought draw.

Accumulating a win and a draw against a formidable DR Congo side over two legs provides significant momentum and valuable tactical insights for upcoming competitive fixtures.
