Kenya’s national women’s football team, the Harambee Starlets, sent a massive shockwave across East African football on Wednesday with a sensational 11–0 thrashing of Seychelles in the first leg of their LA 2028 Olympic Qualification opener at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.
In a display of sheer attacking dominance, the Starlets effectively put the tie to bed within 90 minutes, turning the first leg into a goals showcase that highlighted the growing gap in East African women’s football infrastructure.
The Kenyans showed zero mercy from the opening whistle, relentless in their pressing and lethal in front of goal.
Five different players recorded double strikes on the afternoon:
Mercy Airo, Elizabeth Mideva, Airin Madalina, Elizabeth Muteshi and Valarie Nekesa
Martha Amunyolet added her name to the scoresheet to seal the staggering 11-goal rout, leaving the visitors thoroughly overwhelmed at Ulinzi.
Both teams will return to the Ulinzi Sports Complex this Monday for the second leg.
With an 11-goal deficit to overturn, Seychelles face an virtually impossible task.
For Kenya, Monday’s match offers a chance to rotate squad depth and polish tactical setups ahead of tougher battles waiting in the subsequent qualifying rounds.
Whoever wins will face the winner between Malawi and Zimbabwe.
