Uganda’s national boxing team, the Bombers, have been flagged off for the Africa Boxing Championship scheduled to take place in Kenya from October 15–28, 2026, as they seek continental success and keep their Olympic ambitions alive.

The team was flagged off on Wednesday afternoon during a colourful ceremony held at Cooper Chimney in Lugogo, presided over by Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) president Moses Muhangi and National Council of Sports (NCS) General Secretary Bernard Patrick Ogwel.

The contingent comprises 18 elite boxers, including 10 men and eight women, alongside coaches, referees and UBF officials who will accompany the team to the continental championship.

Matovu Ukasha and Atwine Diana were named captains of the men’s and women’s teams, respectively.

The championship presents an important opportunity for Uganda’s boxers to test themselves against some of Africa’s best fighters as they pursue continental honours and work towards their long-term Olympic ambitions ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

During the flag off, Dr Ogwel urged the boxers to aim for ‘first class performance’ while in Kenya.

“I wish to officially flag off the Bombers team to Kenya. But as you go to represent the country, get to know that we require first class performance from you and our main priority is gold,” he said.

“Victory is about self-determination, discipline, and self-belief. Go and represent us, yourself, and your communities and always never be discouraged.”
