Joel Sserunjogi is set to make his return to the Uganda national football team after missing the 3-3 draw against South Africa on Monday, August 18, 2025.
His absence, due to a one-match suspension following two yellow cards, was strongly felt as Uganda struggled to hold onto the draw.
Sserunjogi’s comeback is a major boost for the Cranes, especially considering his impressive performances in the previous three matches, where he showcased his mastery in midfield.
His leadership and presence in the middle of the park will be crucial as Uganda faces a tough challenge ahead.
The Cranes now have a chance to secure a semi-final spot when they take on Senegal in the quarterfinals at Namboole Stadium on August 23, 2025, at 5:00 PM. Uganda topped their group with seven points, having won two games and drawn one, including the hard-fought draw against South Africa.
This success secured their spot in the knockout stages, where they will now face a formidable Senegal team.
In a press conference held on August 22, Uganda’s head coach, Morley Byekwaso addressed the importance of this upcoming clash:
“We are playing a well-organised team that has been in the tournament for a long time. We have played them in friendlies, and we know their strengths. The Senegalese are very physical, but every team has weaknesses. This is no longer the group stage; mistakes at this level can cost us dearly. The boys are well-prepared both physically and emotionally, so we are good to go,” said Byekwaso.
“We’ve spoken to the boys, and they know the stakes are high. This game is very important. We need to focus on our character, work rate, tactical discipline, and defending. In knockout stages, you can’t afford mistakes. We must minimize errors and force the opponent to make theirs. We know Senegal is a tough side – disciplined, with clear goals – but with the support of our home fans, we will give it our best to win this game.”
Uganda’s players are ready to take on the challenge, with the hope of making it to the semi-finals and keeping their dream alive.
