As the clock ticks down to the 2026 African Men’s Handball Championship in Rwanda, the Kenyan national team is leaving nothing to chance. Under the scorching sun at the Nyayo National Stadium, over 25 players are currently undergoing rigorous training, with a singular focus: making a mark in Kigali.

Kenya faces a daunting task in Group C, where they have been drawn against continental powerhouses Tunisia, Cameroon, and Guinea. Despite the “Group of Death” label, head coach Peter Mwathi remains optimistic, banking on a disciplined defensive approach and the grit of his squad.

“We Are Pushing for the Best”
Speaking exclusively during a training session, Coach Mwathi acknowledged the gap in facilities and experience between Kenya and the North and West African giants but insisted his boys are ready for the battle. “We are training well and hard. We are set to face the Northern and Western countries; we know they are well facilitated, experienced, and hard, but we are pushing for the best out of this tournament,” said Mwathi.

For Mwathi, the strategy is about realistic progression and building a platform for the future. While the main trophy is the ultimate dream, the immediate tactical target is the President’s Cup—the prestigious placement tournament for teams striving to break into the African top 10. “Our target is at least to reach the finals of the President’s Cup. We have to work very hard to reach this stage. This will be very good for us,” the tactician added.

The East African Flavor in Kigali
The 27th edition of the championship is historic, marking the first time the tournament is held in East Africa. With Rwanda hosting in Group A and Uganda making a highly anticipated appearance in Group B (alongside Egypt, Angola, and Gabon), the region is set to be the center of African handball for two weeks.
Kenya’s journey in Group C will require them to bypass seasoned veterans like Tunisia—the most decorated team in the tournament’s history. However, with Mwathi’s emphasis on defensive solidity and the 25-man camp showing high levels of fitness, the Morans are looking to surprise the continent.
