Minnaert Demands Response as Vipers Chase Leaders in Najjembe Test

Vipers SC head to Najjembe on Wednesday knowing there is little margin for error as the Uganda Premier League title race begins to stretch. With KCCA FC having opened up a five-point cushion at the summit, the Venoms must keep winning to stay firmly in touch.

The trip to Lugazi comes with a timely boost as midfielder Marvin Joseph Youngman returns after serving suspension. His absence was barely felt in the 3–1 victory over BUL, where Enock Ssebagala, Karim Watambala and Usama Arafat carried the scoring burden, but Youngman’s influence in the engine room has been central to Vipers’ recent stability and control.

Ivan Minnaert’s options, however, remain stretched. Left-back Derrick Ndahiro is still unavailable with a quad tendon injury, while Allan Okello, Rogers Torach and Hillary Mukundane are away on national duty with the Uganda Cranes in Morocco ahead of AFCON 2025. Even so, the Kitende-based side will back their depth and experience to deliver the required result.

For Lugazi, the fixture represents more than just another league game. Sitting on 10 points and level with Buhimba in the danger zone, they are under pressure to halt a four-match winless run. Encouragingly, they showed resilience last time out by grinding out a 1–1 draw against Police at Najjembe.

The hosts welcome back Richard Ayiko from suspension but will have to cope without Derrick Mwanje, Solomon Okwalinga, Paul Wasswa and Alfred Leku, all sidelined. History offers little separation between the sides at this venue; last season’s Najjembe meeting ended scoreless, though Vipers edged the reverse fixture 1–0 at Kitende courtesy of Watambala.

As Lugazi fight for breathing space and Vipers chase the leaders, Wednesday’s clash sets up as a meeting of contrasting ambitions survival versus silverware.
