NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenyan Premier League was plunged into mourning on Sunday as a high-stakes clash between Nairobi United and Gor Mahia at the Dandora Stadium was abandoned following horrific scenes of violence that left one fan dead and dozens of others traumatized.
What began as a competitive Matchday 15 fixture ended as a crime scene, with reports of widespread muggings and a total breakdown of security inside the stadium.
The Spark: A Goal and a Riot
The match was balanced at 1-1 and heading into the final half-hour when the atmosphere turned poisonous. Gor Mahia had led through Ebenezer Boadi Adukwaw in the 15th minute, but the home side, Nairobi United, clawed back through Michael Ovella Ochieng in the 58th minute.
As the ball hit the net for the equalizer, the stadium exploded—not in celebration, but in chaos. Supporters from both sides began battling, forcing the center referee to immediately call off the match and send players sprinting for the tunnel.
Fatality and Brazen Robberies
Tragically, the violence turned fatal. Sources from the ground confirmed that one supporter succumbed to injuries sustained during the skirmishes. The identity of the deceased has not yet been officially released by the police.
Eyewitness accounts describe a terrifying environment where “goons” took advantage of the panic to rob fans at knifepoint both inside the stands and at the stadium exits.
Mobile phones, wallets, and bags were snatched as supporters scrambled to escape the hail of stones and the teargas canisters lobbed by police.

The hostility followed the record champions out of the gates. The Azam and Gor Mahia team buses were ambushed by a mob, resulting in shattered windscreens and broken side windows. Photos from the scene show the luxury coaches covered in glass shards, a stark image of the “ugly scenes” that have dominated social media since the final whistle.

Tusker FC secured a vital 1-0 away win against APS Bomet, moving them level at the top with 24 points.
Bandari FC edged Mathare United 1-0 in Mombasa to get their season back on track.
