RABAT, Morocco – Uganda’s star forward Allan Okello has shared a message of resilience and gratitude following Saturday’s dramatic East African derby at the AFCON 2025.
In a rain-soaked encounter at the Al Medina Stadium, Okello was presented with a golden opportunity to win the game in stoppage time after James Bogere was fouled in the box. However, his effort blazed over the crossbar, leaving the Cranes to settle for a 1-1 draw.
A Message of Resilience
Taking to social media (X) shortly after the match, Okello acknowledged the disappointment but emphasized the need to move forward. “Disappointed with yesterday’s results but that’s behind us. The focus is now on the last group game. I’m very grateful for all your support,” the player posted.

This show of mental strength mirrors the support he has received from teammates. Goal-scorer Uche Ikpeazu, who earlier leveled the score with a powerful header, stood firmly behind Okello, noting that “we win and lose together” and highlighting the courage it takes to step up in such a high-pressure moment.
The Road Ahead: Do-or-Die against Nigeria
The draw leaves Group C finely balanced, but Uganda’s mission is now crystal clear. With only one point from two matches, the Cranes must secure a win against the already-qualified Nigeria in their final group game to keep their knockout stage dreams alive.

Head coach Paul Put echoed this sentiment, stating that while the result was “very, very painful,” the team must reset their mindset immediately for the showdown in Fes city.
