Angola and Egypt played out a hard-fought 0–0 draw at the Stade d’Agadir on Monday night, a result that underlined the fine margins that have defined Group B of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025.
Although the contest ended without goals, it was rich in intensity and physicality. Angola were the more adventurous side for long spells, particularly in the second half, but Egypt’s defensive organisation and composure ensured they secured the point required to progress to the knockout stage.
The opening minutes set the tone for a bruising encounter. Egypt sought control through patient possession, while Angola focused on physical pressure and quick transitions to disrupt their opponents. The Palancas Negras fashioned the first clear opportunity in the 11th minute when Kialonda Gaspar met a low cross in the box, only to fire wide.

Egypt responded through Mostafa Mohamed, whose improvised overhead kick caused brief alarm, though Abdelmaguid failed to capitalise on the loose ball. As the first half developed, Angola increasingly imposed themselves. Chico Banza dragged an effort wide from range before Fredy forced a spectacular save from goalkeeper Shobeir with a powerful long-distance strike just before the interval.
Angola continued on the front foot after the break despite Egypt introducing several changes. Fredy struck the woodwork with a curling free-kick in the 53rd minute and remained the creative hub in midfield, driving his side forward. Sustained pressure followed through Mabululu and Modesto, but a decisive final touch proved elusive. The closest moment arrived late on when substitute M’Bala Nzola found space in the area, only to see his effort skim the outside of the post.

Egypt, though second-best in open play, defended with discipline and maturity, absorbing late pressure and seeing out stoppage time to preserve a clean sheet. The draw reflected balance on the scoreboard, if not in initiative, with Angola left to reflect on missed opportunities and Egypt satisfied with a result grounded in resilience rather than fluency.
Fredy was named Man of the Match, marking an emotional final appearance for Angola. Head coach Patrice Beaumelle expressed pride despite disappointment, while Egypt’s Hossam Hassan confirmed his side were already looking ahead to the round of 16.

Earlier in Group B, South Africa sealed qualification with a dramatic 3–2 victory over Zimbabwe. Goals from Tshepang Moremi, Lyle Foster and Oswin Appollis proved enough for Bafana Bafana, who held firm under intense late pressure. Zimbabwe bowed out with a single point despite a spirited display.
