TANGIER, Morocco – Senegal captain Sadio Mane admitted that Sudan’s early goal felt like “punishment” before the defending champions rallied to secure a 3-1 victory and a spot in the AFCON 2025 quarterfinals.

The Teranga Lions were stunned just six minutes in when Aamir Abdallah gave Sudan a surprise lead. However, a brace from Pape Gueye and a late strike by teenager Ibrahima Mbaye ensured Senegal’s title defense remained on track.

“A Wake-Up Call”
Speaking after the match, Mané was honest about the early scare. “The goal we conceded came as a shock and felt like punishment,” the star forward said. “But our response was positive. That’s football—the game was not easy at all. Every match at AFCON is difficult.”

Coach Thiaw’s Tactical “Deep Dig”
Senegal coach Pape Thiaw echoed his captain’s sentiments, praising Sudan’s discipline. “We needed to dig deep to come from a goal down. I give credit to my players for the way they focused and recovered. Now we focus on correcting mistakes for the next round.”

Sudan Bowed Out with Pride
Despite the exit, Sudan’s Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah remained defiant. “I am disappointed with the result but proud of the effort. We showed our quality against a very experienced team. I am sure the Sudanese people know we proudly represented them.” He said.
