CASABLANCA, Morocco – Mali head coach Eric Chelle hailed his side’s “vision and hard work” after the Eagles overcame a 26th-minute red card to defeat Tunisia on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw.
The match was a rollercoaster that saw Mali’s Woyo Coulibaly sent off early, only for 10-man Mali to equalize in the 96th minute through a Lassine Sinayoko penalty before winning the shootout 3-2.

Chelle’s Calmness Amid the Chaos
Despite the high tension of playing with ten men, Chelle remained composed on the touchline. “I try to stay focused only on the game. I have my vision,” Chelle said post-match.
“Sometimes it is very good, sometimes bad. That is football. We work every day, and the players work hard. We have to improve if we want to be ambitious.”

Tunisia’s “Mental Reset” Falls Short
For Tunisia, the defeat marks a bitter end to a tournament where they struggled for consistency. Before the game, coach Sami Trabelsi had called for a “mental reset,” but his side couldn’t capitalize on their one-man advantage.
“We are not satisfied with the overall performance and results,” Trabelsi admitted. “Matches at this level are decided by small details and mistakes.”

Diarra the Hero
Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, who saved two penalties in the shootout, was the toast of the Malian fans. His heroics set up a massive quarterfinal clash against Senegal, a match Eric Chelle describes as “the kind of game players dream about.”

What a fantastic performance by Mali! It was truly inspiring to see them battle back like that after receiving a red card.
