The mission for Uganda’s hockey heavyweights, Kampala Hockey Club (KHC) Stallions, has reached its most critical juncture. As the 36th edition of the Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC) enters its final stages at St. John’s College in Harare, Zimbabwe and the Ugandans find themselves locked in a fierce battle for continental pride.

After being flagged off by the National Council of Sports (NCS) earlier this month with the goal of surpassing their 2023 bronze-medal finish, the Stallions have faced a “Group of Death” that has tested every ounce of their tactical discipline.

The Ugandan side has had a gruelling campaign in Pool A where they opened with a reality check. Despite a valiant effort, KHC suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Kenya’s USIU-A, a familiar rival that proved more clinical in front of the goal.

The challenge only intensified as the Stallions met the “Kings of African Hockey,” Sharkia of Egypt. Sharkia, the defending champions and record holders, showed exactly why they dominate the continent, leaving the Ugandans to focus on damage control and structural growth.

Thursday January 29, 2026, marks the final group game for the Stallions as they take on another Egyptian powerhouse, Port Fouad.

This “final hurdle” is more than just a match; it is an opportunity for KHC to secure a favorable seed in the classification playoffs and prove they can compete with the North African giants.

Captain Jordan Michael Mpiima remains optimistic about the team’s trajectory. “We knew the level here would be high. Facing Egypt’s best is the only way for us to measure our progress. Our focus is to finish the group strong and carry that momentum into the final placement games,” Mpiima told journalists in Harare.

While KHC fights for ranking, the podium race is heating up
Egypt’s Sharkia remain the team to beat in the men’s category. In the women’s division, Kenya’s Lakers have made history by booking a gold-medal clash against the defending champions, GRA Royal Ladies of Ghana, set for Saturday.

The knockout and classification phases will begin on Friday, January 30, where KHC will look to secure a top-five finish to maintain their status as a rising power in African hockey.

The Stallions’ journey remains a testament to the growth of the sport, supported by the NCS and the Uganda Hockey Association’s commitment to international exposure.
