The 27th African Men’s Handball Championship in Kigali has been a tournament of “firsts” and “giants.” For the Uganda national team, popularly known as the Nile Kings, it has been a historic, albeit grueling, introduction to the pinnacle of African handball.

As the tournament enters its final 48 hours at the world-class BK Arena, the Nile Kings find themselves in the placement rounds, having faced a “Group of Death” that would have intimidated even the most seasoned veterans.

Drawn into Group B, Uganda was handed the ultimate challenge: opening their campaign against powerhouses Angola and defending champions Egypt.

The highlight of Uganda’s tournament came in their opening match against Angola. In a spirited first half that shocked the Kigali crowd, the Nile Kings went toe-to-toe with the Southern African giants, trailing by just four goals (15-11) at the break. While Angola’s superior depth eventually secured them a 37-21 win, Uganda’s resilience proved they belonged on this stage.

Subsequent matches against Gabon (33-16) and a clinical Egypt side (54-13) served as a stark reminder of the technical and physical gap the Nile Kings must bridge. Egypt, led by stars like Akram Saad, has been unstoppable, recently walloping Nigeria 48-22 to cruise into the semi-finals.

Uganda wasn’t alone in its struggles. Neighbors Kenya also found the going tough in Group C, suffering losses to Tunisia, Guinea, and Cameroon. Both East African representatives have spent the latter half of the week in the President’s Cup, fighting for final rankings between 9th and 16th place.

While the East African sides focus on development, the “Big Four” are ready for war.

Today, Thursday January 29, 2026, the semi-finals will decide who heads to Saturday’s Grand Final:

Egypt vs. Cape Verde: A rematch of the 2022 final.

Algeria vs. Tunisia: A classic North African derby.

All four semi-finalists have already secured their tickets to the 2027 IHF World Men’s Handball Championship in Germany. A fifth and final slot is still up for grabs, with Nigeria and Angola among the favorites to snatch it in the placement playoffs.

For Coach Orotin Jimmy Remmie and his Nile Kings, the 2026 championship is not about the trophy—it’s about the foundation. With young talents like Prosper Wagaba and Gerald Pirwoth getting their first taste of continental action, the future of Ugandan handball looks brighter than the scorelines suggest.

The tournament concludes this Saturday, January 31, with the Grand Final at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.
