The 3rd edition of Som Easter Chess Championships has officially kicked off today at the Som Chess Academy Headquarters in Katwe,Makindye Kampala district.
Over 100 talented young minds participated in this year’s edition from diverse corners of the globe including South Sudan embarked on a life-changing journey.
Juicy cash prizes are on stake for the top performers exceeding 32 million Ugandan shillings (including additional prizes in form of trophies and medals), the championship offers exciting opportunities for both male and female players, and special categories.
In media brief with the 2025 Som Easter Chess Championships Patricia Kawuma expressed his gratitude towards this year’s championship.
” Am ready to compete and win this year’s Som Easter Chess Championships with aim to perform well ahead of my international events”.
Robert Katende the founder of the tournament has applauded all the participants for the love of the game besides difficulties of players from USA and Kenya not to turn up due to flight issues because of the war in Iran.
” This tournament will act has preparation for players ahead of the Africa Chess youth games that gone to take place in Uganda at the Botanical beach gardens in Entebbe and this time around we have introduced Junior categories”.
The Last year’s winner are Nsubuga Harunah and Ndirangu Joyce from Kenya in the ladies and open section respectively.
