City Oilers underlined their championship credentials with a commanding 72-57 victory over UCU Canons, closing the first round of the 2026 National Basketball League on a high note.

The result not only secured top spot but also highlighted the Oilers’ ability to control games when it matters most. After a sluggish opening, they shifted gears in the final quarter, outscoring the Canons 26-12 to seal the win in style.

Joel Kayiira delivered a standout performance with 19 points and 16 rebounds, while Edgar Munaba and Malual Dier added 14 and 12 points respectively to anchor the victory.

The Oilers’ consistency has been the hallmark of their campaign, winning 10 of 11 games to collect 21 points—level with Namuwongo Blazers but edging ahead on overall momentum. Their balanced approach is reflected in 783 points scored and just 614 conceded.

Assistant coach Ben Komakech pointed to the team’s growth and improved structure as key factors behind their resurgence.

“We are happy to finish top of the first round because the boys showed discipline and consistency. This is just the beginning, and we must stay focused for the next phase,” he said.

He added that last season’s struggles, when the team finished seventh at this stage, forced a reset that has now paid off through better fitness and a clearer understanding of their system.

Behind the Oilers, defending champions Namuwongo Blazers remain firmly in contention with a 10-1 record and the league’s best scoring margin (+219). They lead offensively with 866 points and continue to dominate efficiency metrics.

Rezlife Saints sit third with a 9-2 record, relying on a balanced style built around transition play and inside scoring, while KCCA Panthers occupy fourth place despite persistent turnover issues that threaten to derail their progress.

Mid-table sides Sommet BC and JT Jaguars continue to show flashes of promise but lack consistency, while Victoria Crocs and UPDF Tomahawks are hampered by defensive frailties.

At the bottom, JKL Dolphins, UMU Flames and Kampala Rockets remain under pressure with just two wins each, struggling with efficiency and defensive organisation.

As the league heads into the second round, the battle at the top remains finely poised, with the Oilers, Blazers and Saints setting the pace in what is shaping up to be a tightly contested title race.
