SC Villa travel to Kamwenge on Wednesday looking to revive their push for a strong league finish when they face a resurgent Mbarara City side in the Uganda Premier League.

The record league champions saw their fading title hopes take another hit after being held to a barren draw by BUL at home, but the race for continental places remains firmly alive. Villa currently sit fourth on 52 points and could climb into the top three with victory following Kitara’s 3-2 defeat to Express FC.

A favourable result elsewhere could further improve their standing, with second-placed KCCA also in action away to UPDF at the same time.

Attention will also be on how coach Zeljko Kovacevic manages his squad ahead of Saturday’s Stanbic Uganda Cup semifinal return leg against Kataka at Kadiba. Rotation could be considered, although Villa still need points to strengthen their league position.

The visitors will rely on experienced attackers Frank Ssebuufu and Patrick Kakande alongside Najib Yiga and Hassan Mubiru to break down the hosts. Villa head into the contest with confidence after thrashing Mbarara City 6-1 in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

However, Mbarara City appear to have rediscovered form at a crucial stage of the campaign. The Ankole Lions are unbeaten in four matches and have secured back-to-back victories to move up to 12th place on 24 points, easing some relegation pressure.
