Mukono District has intensified efforts to develop Kabaddi ahead of the sport’s demonstration at the upcoming Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ball Games II National Championships, scheduled to take place at Sacred Heart Secondary School in Gulu later this academic term.

As various zones across the country continue to embrace the rapidly growing sport, Mukono has made significant progress through a capacity-building initiative aimed at equipping teachers, coaches, and students with the knowledge and skills required to promote and participate in Kabaddi.

The training session was conducted on Wednesday, June 14, in Nakifuma Zone A and was facilitated by Joshua Jalon of the Mukono District Kabaddi Association.

A total of 68 participants from schools across three USSSA zones, including Nakifuma and Mukono, benefited from the programme, marking an important milestone in the introduction and development of Kabaddi within the district.

Following the successful training exercise, Mukono Zone is expected to commence its qualification process, with at least four school teams projected to secure places at the inaugural USSSA National Kabaddi Schools Championship.

Kabaddi is among the disciplines set to be showcased during this year’s Ball Games II as stakeholders continue efforts to expand the sport’s footprint within Uganda’s school sports structure.

Although this will be the first time Kabaddi is featured at the USSSA National Championships, the Uganda Kabaddi Federation has previously organised competitions and development programmes in different parts of the country to promote the sport.

Several schools, including Kyadondo Secondary School and St. Barnabas Secondary School, have already emerged as some of the sport’s leading performers, reflecting Kabaddi’s growing popularity among Uganda’s school-going athletes.

With awareness and participation steadily increasing, stakeholders believe the inclusion of Kabaddi at the national championships will provide a major boost to the sport’s growth, visibility, and long-term development across the country.
