South Africa’s FIFA World Cup dream could face an early setback unless they secure a positive result against Czechia in a crucial Group A encounter on Thursday.
After suffering a 2-0 defeat to tournament hosts Mexico in their opening match, Bafana Bafana find themselves under pressure to respond against a Czech side that is equally desperate for points following a narrow 2-1 loss to South Korea.
With Mexico and South Korea already holding a three-point advantage in the group, Thursday’s showdown in Atlanta has all the ingredients of an early knockout match, with defeat likely to leave the losing side facing an uphill battle to reach the last 32.
Despite the disappointing start, South Africa head coach Hugo Broos remains convinced his team has what it takes to bounce back.
“It was not the start we wanted, but I don’t think the scoreline reflects the effort the players put in,” Broos said after the defeat to Mexico.
“We were well organised for long periods and, despite the setbacks, I saw enough to believe we can still achieve something in this tournament. We must learn from our mistakes, improve in the final third and focus fully on the next match. Nothing is lost yet.”
The Belgian tactician believes the experience of facing the host nation in a packed stadium will benefit his relatively inexperienced squad, many of whom are appearing at the FIFA World Cup for the first time.
South Africa’s biggest concern heading into the match remains their lack of cutting edge in attack. Against Mexico, Bafana Bafana struggled to create clear scoring opportunities despite showing discipline and structure for much of the contest.
Broos could therefore turn to some of his younger attacking talents in a bid to inject pace and creativity into the side. Players such as Relebohile Mofokeng, Tshepang Moremi and Thapelo Maseko are all pushing for greater involvement after showing promise in recent appearances.
For Czechia, the mission is equally straightforward: avoid a second consecutive defeat and keep qualification hopes alive. Their narrow loss to South Korea showed plenty of encouraging signs, meaning South Africa will have to produce an improved display to emerge with maximum points.
With both teams still searching for their first victory of the tournament, the stakes could hardly be higher as Group A enters a decisive phase.
