Bulemeezi Ssaza management has officially appointed David Mutono Katono as the team’s new head coach, replacing Leo Ssekamatte following the team’s poor start to the 2026 Masaza Cup campaign.

Ssekamatte leaves the role after collecting just one point from his two matches in charge. Bulemeezi opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Ssese before suffering a 1-0 defeat to three-time champions Mawokota.

Bulemeezi compete in the competitive Masengere Group alongside record champions Gomba, Mawokota, Busiro, Kyaggwe and Ssese.

The team failed to progress beyond the group stage in the previous edition and will be aiming to win a fourth Masaza Cup title.Bulemeezi were crowned champions in 2012, 2019 and 2023.

Mutono arrives with vast experience in Ugandan football. Last season Mutono was at Mawokota Ssaza and was sacked following a string of disappointing results.

He guided Kyaggwe to their maiden Masaza Cup final in 2024, where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Buddu at Mandela National Stadium, with Michael Walaga scoring the decisive goal.

The experienced tactician has previously coached the now-defunct Soana FC, Kyetume FC and Gaddafi FC. He also led Kyetume FC to promotion to the Uganda Premier League and has built a reputation as one of the country’s experienced local coaches.

He will begin his new assignment on Sunday when Bulemeezi face one of the tournament favourites, Kyaggwe, at Bishop Senior School in Mukono.
