Nigeria’s Under-20 Women’s National Team, the Falconets, saw their journey at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland end in heartbreaking fashion.
Colombia broke Nigerian hearts deep into stoppage time when Valerin Loboa struck in the 92nd minute to send Las Cafeteras into the semi-finals and end Nigeria’s campaign.
The decisive moment came after Nigeria had been reduced to 10 players in the 77th minute, when Kafayat Mafisere was shown a straight red card — a decision subsequently confirmed by VAR.
FROM HIGH TO HEARTBREAK
It was a cruel end for Coach Moses Aduku and his girls, who had given Nigerian fans real belief after a stunning 3-0 demolition of England in the Round of 16.
Nigeria had been dreaming of reaching the last four for the first time since 2014, and a first semi-final appearance since 2010. The defeat also ends their long wait for a first U-20 Women’s World Cup title, having finished as runners-up in 2010 and 2014.
The result was also sweet revenge for Colombia. The last time the two sides met at this stage, in the semi-finals of the 2010 edition in Germany, Nigeria won 1-0 thanks to an early strike from Ebere Orji.
THE JOURNEY TO POLAND
The Falconets had earned their ticket to Poland after surviving a tough test in Lilongwe, edging Malawi’s Young Scorchers 3-2 on aggregate to qualify.
They showed character, quality, and resilience throughout the tournament in Poland — but football can be cruel. One late goal, one red card, and a dream run is over.
