Uganda U20 Head Coach Laryea Kingston has called for total focus and a fresh mental approach as the Uganda Hippos gear up for a high-stakes semifinal clash against Sudan on Tuesday at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The two sides meet again just days after Uganda edged Sudan 1-0 in their final Group B match—a victory sealed by substitute Amour Munogera to secure top spot in the group.
However, Kingston is warning his squad against complacency, insisting that knockout football requires an entirely different mindset.
Facing the same opponent within a span of three to five days is a rare challenge at tournament level, but Kingston views it as an opportunity to apply continental tactics. “It’s an important game for us, and the most difficult part is that we played them already,” Kingston told Roramedia in Dar es Salaam ahead of Tuesday’s clash.
“But then again, we should have the mindset of the previous qualification chances—like in the CAF Champions League—where you play the same team within a space of three to five days, so we treat it the same way.”
Having already tested Sudan’s setup, Kingston believes both coaching staffs enter the match with detailed tactical familiarity. “It’s very good that we played each other; we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” he added.
With a short turnaround between matches, recovery has taken center stage in the Hippos’ camp.
Kingston confirmed that training intensity has been adjusted based on player workload to ensure maximum squad readiness. “For the ones that played more minutes—more than 70 minutes—it has been very low intensity,” Kingston explained. “The ones that got fewer minutes, we push them a little bit so that we have the same level of condition when it comes to game situations.”
Despite the physical demands of the tournament, the Ghanaian tactician delivered positive news on the team’s medical front, confirming a fully fit squad available for selection. “As of now, everyone is fit, which is very good,” Kingston confirmed. “We can see some fatigue in some of the players, but the doctor, the medical team, and the technical team are managing it very well.
We are paying particular attention to those players, and hopefully, on Tuesday they will be ready for the game.”
While Uganda enjoyed a flawless group stage campaign, Kingston emphasized that group stage points no longer matter once the whistle blows on Tuesday. “The atmosphere in the group has been very positive,” Kingston remarked. “We told them that we should put the win behind us now. We are in a different stage—it’s a knockout stage—so all we have to do is win the game.”
A victory for the Hippos on Tuesday will not only book their place in the CECAFA U20 final, but also secure automatic qualification for the upcoming CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations.
