NEC FC’s journey in the CAF Confederation Cup has come to an abrupt end after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Nairobi United in the return leg of the preliminary round at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

The Ugandan debutants, who had drawn 2-2 at home in Kampala a week earlier, went into the second leg hoping to snatch a historic qualification. However, the result in Nairobi meant the tie ended 3-3 on aggregate, with Nairobi United progressing on the away goals rule.
NEC showed intent from the start and were rewarded midway through the first half when forward Charles Waibi broke the deadlock in the 26th minute, sparking hope among the travelling fans. The Ugandans managed to hold onto their advantage going into the break, keeping alive their dream of advancing further in the continental showpiece.

But the hosts returned stronger in the second half and kept piling pressure. Their persistence finally paid off in the 65th minute when Duncan Oluoch struck to level matters, a goal that proved decisive as NEC failed to find another breakthrough despite late attempts.
The result means NEC’s maiden continental campaign comes to a close earlier than they had wished, but the team will take positives from their spirited displays against a tough Nairobi side. The focus now shifts back to domestic competitions, where the club will aim to build on the experience gained from their first outing on the continental stage.
