National Basketball league play offs
Today(Wednesday), YMCA
Magic Stommers v Lady Jaguars 7pm
Lady Dolphins v Lady Canons 9pm
The 2024/25 National Basketball League (NBL) Women’s Playoffs semifinals, which begin today at YMCA, are more than just another chapter in Ugandan basketball they are a clash of eras. On one side, tradition and dominance; on the other, hungry challengers with nothing to lose.
For years, the JKL Lady Dolphins and UCU Lady Canons have defined women’s basketball in Uganda, trading championships and individual accolades. Now, as the semifinals tip off, two ambitious outsiders JT Lady Jaguars and Magic Stormers are out to prove that the balance of power can shift.
Old Rivalry Renewed
The Lady Dolphins–Lady Canons pairing needs no introduction. Between them, they hold almost every major NBL title of the last decade.
JKL come in looking untouchable, having dismantled the UPDF Lady Tomahawks in the quarters. With Hope Akello the league’s most dominant player in scoring, rebounding, and efficiency at the helm, the defending champions look like a machine built for back-to-back titles.
But UCU, the eight-time winners, thrive on being underestimated. Their resilience was on full display when they stormed back from a double-digit halftime deficit to eliminate KIU Rangers. With Sylvia Nakituka stretching defenses, Shilah Lamunu’s composure at the point, and Zoe Atek finding her rhythm, the Canons still carry the heart of champions.
The New Wave Rising
On the other side of the bracket, the semifinals offer something fresh a battle between teams fighting to rewrite the script.
The JT Lady Jaguars, just a few years into building their brand, arrive with momentum after sweeping Miracle Eaglets. They play fast, bold basketball, anchored by the aggressive guard play of Shakira Nanvubya and Rhoda Nagitta, while Sarah Ageno gives them strength inside.
But the real story is the Magic Stormers. Their stunning elimination of KCCA Leopards has already been labeled the upset of the season. With their smothering defense and fearless mindset, coach John Omondi’s side has turned heads. Angela Auma and Christine Nakito lead a unit that looks more like a hustling streetball squad than a polished contender but it works.
More Than Just Basketball
This year’s semifinals aren’t just about who reaches the finals they’re about whether the old order will hold or if a new generation can finally crash the gate.
The best-of-five format ensures no flukes only consistency, depth, and championship mentality will carry the day. Will it be the familiar names battling once again in the finals, or will the Stormers and Jaguars inject fresh blood into the championship series?
