The FIA African Rally Championship (ARC) finale is heating up this weekend in Morogoro, Tanzania, with the Mkwawa Rally of Tanzania! Uganda’s Yasin Nasser is leading the charge, eyeing a historic win that could end Uganda’s 26-year wait for continental rally glory.
He’s currently topping the championship standings with 114 points, putting him in striking distance of becoming the first Ugandan ARC Champion since Charles Muhangi and Steven Byaruhanga in 1999.
Nasser faces stiff competition from Kenyans Samman Vohra and Karan Patel, both formidable forces in the ARC. Vohra recently swept the Burundi Rally, tightening the championship battle. With 23 drivers from Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, and other countries ready to battle, the stakes are high.
The three-day Mkwawa Rally covers 181 kilometers of competitive stages, navigating diverse Morogoro terrains like the TFS plantation area in Mkundi, totaling 326 kilometers. Action unfolds September 19-21.
Nasser’s impressive ARC performance has Uganda on the brink of history. Co-driver Ali Katumba exudes confidence: “We looking forward to bring it home. We have one hand on the championship. We believe to achieve this as a team and for the country.” For Nasser, winning the ARC would fulfill a dream begun in 2015, following two Ugandan Rally Championships.
Recent standings show Nasser leading with 118 points after Burundi, followed by Samman Vohra (106 points) and Nikhil Sachania (77 points). The finale in Tanzania will be decisive.
