Bombers shine at the Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championships in Nairobi

Uganda National Boxing Team, ‘The Bombers’ has shined at the Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championships in Kenya. Bombers won fifteen medals of which five gold, four silver and six bronze in various categories.

The tournament that run from October 14th to 24th in Nairobi at Kasarani indoor Arena saw 123 boxers from twelve African countries compete as Uganda boxers dominated across all weight categories, securing impressive victories.

A total of 123 boxers participated in this year’s championship, with 81 men and 42 women drawn from 12 countries within the Zone. The strong representation from across the region underscores the growing interest and investment in boxing development, as well as the commitment of member federations to promoting the sport at all levels.

The balanced participation between male and female boxers highlights the steady progress being made toward gender inclusivity and equality in African boxing. This year’s turnout is a clear reflection of the Zone’s collective effort to enhance competitiveness, technical excellence, and regional cooperation through sport.

Ugandan heavyweight boxer Aziz Ringo, the grandson of former Ugandan President Field Marshal Idi Amin Dada, produced a dominant display in the 92-Kilogram category, defeating Kenya’s peter Abuti 3-2 in the finals.

Fatuma Nabikolo showcased remarkable skill and composure as she defeated Phoba Kerene of Congo in the 57 Kilogram final bout.

Emily Nakalema Overpowered Tanzania’s Salma Yahya, winning in the first around when the referee stopped the contest also Aziz Rigo beat Kenya’s peter Abuti 3-2 in the 92kg category.

Murungi Kasim also advanced to the final after defeating Kenya’s Paul Omondi by a 4–1 split decision in the 57 Kilogram semi-final match. In the finals Kassim Murungi edged Kenya’s Phoba kumbo Mwinyi 3-2 in the 57 kg final. Farahat Manirola continued Uganda’s fine run with an impressive final defeating Congo’s Ndjibu in the 63.5kg final.

Four Ugandans won Silver at the championships. Brenda Muduwa lost 2-3 in the 50 Kilogram category finals.

Ochien Samuel further added to Uganda’s medal hopes by defeating Rwanda’s Iraneza Aime through a unanimous decision after a highly competitive match while in the finals lost 2-3 to scoop silver.

Meanwhile, Mukwaya Edward after delivered another convincing performance, securing a 5–0 unanimous win over Gabon’s Lendoye Arthur in the 60 kilogram category but lost 2-3 in final to book another silver while Alfred ojok lost 2-3 for another Silver.

Six Ugandans include; Erina Namutebi, Matovu Livingstone, Kanaabi Alex, Tabule Emmanuel, Katushabe Angel, ⁠Adriko Jimmy won bronze medals. Out of 16 bombers who participated in the Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championships only Kato Kazibwe missed out on the medal.

The series of victories highlight Uganda’s resurgence as a boxing powerhouse in Africa, with the team’s unity and technical depth drawing praise from sports analysts and fans.

According to officials, the winners of the Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championships will not only walk away with prestigious titles but also earn opportunities to compete on the international stage, including qualification pathways for continental and world events.
