The group stage of the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup has officially drawn to a close at the Kigali Pelé Stadium, leaving four regional giants standing while delivering high-stakes drama and heartbreak for Uganda’s sole representatives, Vipers SC.
Despite a spirited campaign in Kigali, Denis Lavagne’s Venoms missed out on a semi-final spot by the narrowest of margins following the conclusion of Group C fixtures.
Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC entered the final day of group stage action with high hopes after securing two victories out of three in Group A—highlighted by a dramatic 1–0 triumph over Kenyan champions Gor Mahia FC courtesy of Gusto Mulongo’s late header.
However, a 2–1 loss to Rwandan hosts APR FC in their final group fixture left the Kitende-based side on six points (+3 goal difference).
With only group winners and the single best second-placed team advancing, Vipers were forced into a tense waiting game. Rayon Sport’s 1–0 victory over Sudan’s Al Hilal SC on Saturday sealed Group C. The result allowed Al Hilal to clinch the lone wildcard semi-final ticket as the best runner-up, effectively ending Vipers’ campaign on Rwanda soil.
The tournament now shifts into high gear at the Kigali Pele Stadium in Kigali on Tuesday, August 4, featuring a high-octane double-header:
- Gor Mahia FC (Kenya) vs. Al Hilal SC (Sudan), 4:00 PM EAT (3:00 PM CAT)
The story of the FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia rebounded from their defeat against Vipers to top Group A with six points (+5 GD) after edging Djibouti’s Garde Republicaine 1–0. They lock horns with Sudanese powerhouse Al Hilal, who qualified as the best overall runner-up. Both sides are eyeing a spot in the final as part of their continental pre-season preparations.
- Rayon Sport FC (Rwanda) vs. Jamus SC (South Sudan), 7:00 PM EAT (6:00 PM CAT) Hosts Rayon Sport enter the last four as the only team with a flawless 100% winning record after sweeping Group C with 9 points. Standing in their way is the tournament’s surprise package, Jamus SC of South Sudan, who remarkably topped Group B with 7 points following a 2–1 comeback win over Mogadishu City Club.
While the elimination is a bitter pill to swallow for Denis Lavagne and his squad, the tournament provided crucial competitive minutes for new signings and returnees ahead of their domestic title defense and upcoming CAF Champions League qualifying campaign.
Attention for the Venoms now shifts back to Kampala as they regroup for their remaining pre-season preparations.
