Unsavory and chaotic scenes took center stage in Nairobi as the high-stakes Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League promotion/relegation playoff second leg between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United was called off in the 66th minute following a pitch invasion triggered by a disputed penalty call.
Entering the clash with their top-flight survival on the line after a 2–1 loss in the first leg at Mbaraki Sports Club stadium in Mombasa, Kariobangi Sharks had fought back to level the aggregate scoreline.
Despite conceding in the very first minute to Mombasa United, Sharks responded strongly to hold a 2–1 lead on the day (3–3 aggregate). However, the tie descended into uproar when referee John Sulwe pointed to the spot after a visiting player went down inside the Sharks penalty area following a corner kick.
Furious reactions from Kariobangi Sharks players and officials quickly escalated as irate supporters breached the pitch perimeter to confront the match official.
Security stewards were forced to step in quickly to escort referee Sulwe off the field to safety, leaving the spot-kick untaken and forcing the match to be abandoned.
Had Mombasa United taken and converted the spot-kick, they would have edged into a crucial 4–3 aggregate advantage to seal promotion to the Kenyan top flight.
All eyes now turn to the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee to review referee and match commissioner reports.
Depending on the disciplinary committee’s findings, consequences could range from awarding a walkover to Mombasa United, ordering a replay behind closed doors, or imposing heavy sanctions on Kariobangi Sharks for fan misconduct.
With the winner scheduled to secure a place in the top-flight fixtures alongside East Africa’s footballing heavyweights, the fate of both clubs remains hanging in the balance.
