Former national team captain Habib Ssebuguzi emerged as the biggest casualty of the final round of the Nile Special National Pool Open Championship qualifiers after failing to secure a place at Lugogo for this weekend’s action.
Ssebuguzi, who is outside the top eight, suffered a heavy 5–0 defeat to Julius Ssemanda Bisimba in the second round at iTaano Arena in Mukono, where he also serves as the venue manager.
However, there was a reprieve for his Scrap Buyers teammate Lawrence Ssengonge, who squeezed through under dramatic circumstances.
Ssengonge had been eliminated in Wandegeya at Casablanca, but his conqueror Bruno Kabuga was later found guilty of double registration and was consequently struck off the final list.
Elsewhere, Alfred Gumikiriza, popularly known as Blacksheep, qualified as the second-best player from Busiia, marking a return after missing last year’s qualifiers.
The grand finals of the championship will take place this weekend at Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
