The Uganda national motorcycle team, led by captain Gift Ssebuguzi, is gearing up to compete in the FIM Africa Motocross of Africa Nations championship in Harare, Zimbabwe. Ssebuguzi, the 2022 African MX 85cc champion, is determined to bring back the title for Uganda, which was last won in 2012.

Ssebuguzi’s Emotional Pledge

Recalling last year’s African Championships in Marrakech, Morocco, where he suffered a bike accident on his birthday, Ssebuguzi was emotional but resolute.

“I felt like the ground was falling at that moment, I cried all day, but this time I went with two bikes, mechanics, and the vibe is very high. Team Uganda, we have to bring back the title we last won in 2012,” he promised.

Funding Challenges

Despite the team’s determination, funding issues forced 16 riders, including top performers like Haiden Kaliisa, Adam Kabuye, and Habib Kiggundu, to stay behind. The team needed at least UGX 240 million (approximately $65,000), which was not fully secured. However, some charitable organizations and sponsors, including Uganda Airlines, St. Francis Jnr School, and Lato Milk, have provided support.

Uganda’s Goal

After finishing second in the tournament last season, Uganda is eager to change history and bring home the title. With Ssebuguzi’s leadership and the team’s determination, they are poised to make a strong showing in the championship.
