Mozambique shocks hosts as they emerged as the biggest winners on the first day of the HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA Cup 2025, defeating hosts South Africa 1-0 at the Toyota Stadium on Wednesday.

Antonio Sumbane’s second-half goal, where he tapped the ball into the net at the back post after a South African defender failed to clear a delivery, earned Mozambique three precious points and top spot in Group A.

South Africa’s missed opportunities

Despite dominating the game, South Africa missed several chances to earn at least a point, while Mozambique also had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half.

The introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) added an exciting dimension to the tournament, marking its first use in a regional competition on the African continent.

Mauritius holds Zimbabwe to a draw

In the day’s second match, Mauritius held six-time champions Zimbabwe to a 0-0 draw, with the Mauritius team putting in an excellent display that will have surprised the Zimbabweans. A VAR ruling took away a potential goal for Mauritius due to handball.

Action Continues today Thursday

The tournament continues on Thursday with two Group B matches at the same venue. Malawi takes on Lesotho, while defending champions Angola face Namibia in a repeat of last year’s final, which Angola won 5-0.
