Rwanda’s U-20 national team has become the first side eliminated from the ongoing AFCON CECAFA U-20 Qualifiers following a goalless draw against Ethiopia at the Uhuru Stadium on Thursday.

Having suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of host nation Tanzania in their opening Group A match earlier in the week, Rwanda needed a win against Ethiopia to salvage their campaign.

However, a stubborn Ethiopian side held firm throughout 90 minutes to ensure the points were shared.

The result leaves Rwanda bottom of Group A with just one point from two matches, officially ending their hopes of securing a place in the semi-finals.

Group A Standings

1. Tanzania 3points

2. Ethiopia 1pont

3. Rwanda (E) 1point

Host nation Tanzania currently leads Group A with 3 points and a healthy +3 goal difference following their opening-day masterclass against Rwanda.

The Ngorongoro Heroes only require a draw against Ethiopia in their final group fixture on Saturday at Uhuru Stadium to lock up top spot and book a automatic place in the semi-finals.

Ethiopia can still pull off a surprise advancement if they manage to pull an upset victory over Tanzania, which would see them finish top of the group with 4 points.

Meanwhile, Ugandan fans will be keeping a close eye on the regional tournament as the Hippos look to build on their impressive 4-1 opening win over Djibouti in Group B and secure safe passage to the semi-finals.
