Four-time Uganda National Rally Champion Ronald Ssebuguzi has reportedly started the hunt for a new rally car as he looks to add another chapter to his remarkable career.
Ssebuguzi, who claimed national titles in 2006, 2009, 2014 and most recently in 2025, is understood to be targeting a proper R5-specification machine.
The veteran has enjoyed success in almost every generation of rally machinery — from the legendary Toyota Celica, through the Mitsubishi Evolution series, to his more recent Ford Proto.
But after conquering Uganda’s stages in different eras, Ssebuguzi now appears ready for a major upgrade.
An R5 would be a significant step forward: modern four-wheel-drive technology, sophisticated handling and the reliability needed to stay at the sharp end of Uganda’s increasingly competitive championship.
His return to the top in 2025, 11 years after his previous title in 2014 proved that experience and race craft have done little to slow the four-time champion down. His championship journey began in 2006, before he successfully defended his place at the top in 2009. He then waited five years for his third crown in 2014, before completing the remarkable comeback with his fourth title in 2025.
Now, the search for an R5 could signal a new ambition. For a driver who has already conquered Uganda’s rally scene in different generations of cars, the arrival of a modern R5 would provide Ssebuguzi with an opportunity to match his experience and race craft with some of the most competitive machinery available.
There is no official confirmation yet on which R5 he is targeting, but the prospect of Ssebuguzi returning with modern machinery is already exciting rally fans.
He’s done it in a Celica, an Evo and a Proto. Could an R5 be the car that ushers in championship number five?
The required budget might be a significant hurdle for a champion like Ssebuguzi. His previous ventures showed different financial demands.
