Harare, Zimbabwe — Ugandan goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya has capped off a phenomenal season with Zimbabwe’s Hard Rock Football Club, earning the Goalkeeper of the Year award after guiding the Kwekwe-based side to promotion into the top tier Zimbabwe Premier League.

Kigonya’s incredible campaign was the bedrock of Hard Rock FC’s success in the Central Division League, which saw them clinch the top spot and a direct slot to the Premier League next season.

A Goalkeeper… and a Goalscorer!
The Ugandan shot-stopper did more than just keep goals out; he astonishingly chipped in with three crucial goals and five assists during the promotion-winning season. His dual threat capability solidified his standing as one of the league’s best players, culminating in him being named the first runner-up for the League’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

While speaking to Rora Media after after receiving the accolades, the veteran custodian reflected on the hard-fought season.

“This has been a marathon of grit and passion! We faced every challenge head-on, from the low moments of sadness to the sheer ecstasy of victory. But the main mission was accomplished: we are Premier League bound! To top it off with these personal accolades is truly the cherry on the cake. The hard work paid off, and all praise and glory go back to the Almighty,” Kigonya said, clearly thrilled by the achievement.

Following a Well-Worn Path
Kigonya’s success at Hard Rock FC adds another significant achievement to his extensive regional footballing CV and cements his place in a proud tradition. He joins a notable group of Ugandans who have traded their talents in the Southern African nation.

This list includes former Uganda Cranes midfielder Boban Zirintusa, who famously played for powerhouse club Dynamos FC, and Kigonya himself, who previously featured for Yadah FC in the Zimbabwe Premier League before joining Hard Rock FC.

Kigonya’s journeyman path has also seen him play for:
Uganda: Started his career at Bright Stars FC.
Kenya: Featured for giants Sofapaka and Kakamega Homeboys.
Tanzania: Represented Azam FC in the Tanzanian Premier League.
Zambia: Played for Forest Rangers and Trident FC.
