The Uganda Boxing Team, famously known as the Bombers, has been officially flagged off, brimming with confidence as they prepare to compete in the prestigious Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championships. The championship is scheduled to electrify the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani, in Kenya from October 16th to 24th, 2025.
A formidable contingent of 15 elite men and women boxers was ceremonially flagged off at an open event held at the Hockey grounds in Lugogo. The ceremony was presided over by Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) president Moses Muhangi and National Council of Sports (NCS) Representative, Ms. Anne Nankya. This send-off follows two weeks of intensified training, during which the team honed their skills and physical conditioning.

Leadership and Coaching:
Leading the charge for the Bombers are team captains Murungi Kassim for the ten-man squad and Emily Nakalema for the five-woman team. They will be guided by the experienced hand of Head Coach Lawrence Kalyango, supported by a dedicated technical bench comprising Ramathan Seguya and Abdu Tebazalwa.
During the ceremony, NCS representative Anne Nankya formally handed over the national flag to Team Captain Murungi Kassim, a symbolic gesture entrusting him to lead Uganda’s contingent, which features a compelling mix of seasoned campaigners and youthful, energetic boxers.
Regional Showdown:
The Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championships will bring together top boxing talent from across the region, promising fierce competition. Countries expected to participate include Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Congo, Zimbabwe, South Sudan, Burundi, and Uganda, among others.

UBF President’s Vision for Gold:
In a media brief with Rora Media Sports, Uganda Boxing Federation President, Mr. Moses Muhangi, expressed unwavering confidence in the team’s potential. “We believe our coaches have done their best. We have to focus on what we have, and we are coming for gold,” Muhangi asserted.
He elaborated on the stringent selection process: “The selection criteria for the national team is drawn from the cream-de-la-cream of the Uganda Boxing Champions League, where every winner in each category earns a national team ticket. These are the best boxers in the country, and I believe we expect nothing but the best out of this.”
However, Muhangi also voiced concerns regarding the team’s preparation, noting that inadequate funding from the National Council of Sports has directly impacted Uganda’s ability to prepare optimally for the championships in Nairobi.
