Kenyan Hamza Anwar, a son to legendary Azar Anwar, a retired five-time Kenyan National Champion, is seeking to step up from the WRC 3 to the WRC 2 category this year. He will be among the 36 drivers to compete at the 2025 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally-Kenya.
The 26-year-old is now looking forward to making a huge statement on home soil next month during the event that will run from March 20-23 in the capital Nairobi and Naivasha town.
“You know the butterflies are still there, but we are preparing well, we are watching our own boards, going through notes from previous years, where there are a couple of changes and reversed stages in this rally of 2025. So, we are preparing as much as we can to attack the Safari,” he underscored.
The Safari Rally will feature five competitions with WRC 1 featuring the big boys and their works team machines in the race for the global driver’s and manufacturer’s titles. WRC 2 and WRC 3 categories will see points earned towards the supplementary competitions in the global calendar. It will also be a round of the Africa Rally Championship as well as Kenya National Rally Championship round.

“The plans for Safari are to attack of course but we also have to consider plans for ARC also and perhaps the Kenya National Rally Championship. It’s going to be an interesting one, with the big dogs coming to play and big dog cars, a big battle awaits,” the scion of the famous Anwar who won the WRC 3 category in last year’s Safari Rally told Rora Media.
Anwar, ran a full season of Junior WRC in 2023 after clinching the FIA African Rally Championship (ARC) Junior title. During the WRC Junior campaign in 2023, Anwar took part in the EKO Acropolis Rally Greece, Rally Estonia WRC, Rally Italia Sardegna, WRC Croatia Rally, and WRC Rally Sweden.
