Former Harambee Starlets head coach David Ouma has officially taken the helm at Tanzanian side Singida Black Stars, earning a promotion from his previous role as assistant coach to lead the club as head coach.

The appointment, confirmed on January 5, 2026, marks a significant step in Ouma’s coaching career. He succeeds Argentine tactician Miguel Angel Gamondi, who is transitioning into the role of Technical Director for the club amid reports of his potential appointment as the permanent head coach of the Tanzanian national team.

A Proven Track Record

Ouma arrives at the post with an elite pedigree. Holding both a UEFA license and a CAF A license, he is one of the most decorated Kenyan coaches of his generation. His storied 21-year career includes successful stints with Kenyan Premier League giants Posta Rangers, Mathare United, and Sofapaka—the latter of which he led to a domestic cup title in 2014.

On the international stage, Ouma’s crowning achievement remains qualifying the Harambee Starlets for their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Cameroon in 2016. He also gained invaluable experience serving as the assistant coach for the Kenyan men’s national team under Bobby Williamson.

Immediate Tactical Challenges

Ouma takes charge at a critical juncture for the “Black Stars.” His first priority will be to rescue the club’s CAF Confederation Cup campaign. Singida currently sits at the bottom of Group C with just one point from two matches. His first assignment on the touchline will be a high-stakes home clash against Congolese side Otoho d’Oyo on Sunday, January 25.

Domestically, Ouma faces an uphill battle to stabilize the team’s league form. Singida Black Stars currently occupy 12th place in the Tanzania Premier League, having collected eight points from their opening five games.

With a debut continental assignment just weeks away, the Kenyan tactician will need to hit the ground running to reignite the club’s season both at home and across the borders.
