ZANZIBAR – Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) FC’s journey in the 2026 Mapinduzi Cup has come to an end following a narrow 2-1 defeat to Tanzanian giants Azam FC in their final Group A encounter at the New Amaan Complex.

Despite a spirited performance and an early lead, the “Tax Collectors” could not withstand a late surge from the “Ice Cream Makers,” a result that sees them exit the tournament at the group stage.

Early Promise
The Ugandan side started the match with intent, knowing that only a win would guarantee them a spot in the semifinals. Their pressure paid off early in the 10th minute when star forward Nelson Ssenkatuuka found the back of the net, clinical as ever following a brilliant assist from the energetic Moses Aliro.

The goal silenced the home crowd and gave URA fans hope of a knockout berth. However, Azam FC, spurred on by the need to progress, responded quickly.

Azam’s Lethal Comeback
Azam leveled the score in the 20th minute through their dangerous Congolese striker Japhet Kitambala Bola, who pounced on a defensive lapse to restore parity.
The match remained a cagey affair for much of the second half, with both sides missing chances to take the lead.

Just as the game seemed destined for a draw—which would still have favored Azam—young star Alobogast Kyobya struck a dagger into Ugandan hearts. Kyobya found the winner in the 94th minute, deep into stoppage time, to seal the victory for Azam and send them into the semifinals.

“We Are Sharper Now” – Hudu Mulikyi
Speaking after the final whistle, veteran defender Hudu Mulikyi expressed mixed emotions, noting that while the exit was painful, the tournament served its purpose as a high-quality preseason-style test. “We gave our best in this tournament, but this is what has happened. We wish all the best to the remaining teams,” Mulikyi said. “This tournament has sharpened us ahead of the Uganda Premier League that resumes this week.”

Final Group A Standings
With the group matches concluded, Azam FC finishes on top with 7 points, followed by Singida Black Stars, who also advance with 5 points. URA FC finishes third with 4 points, while Mlandege FC exits without a point.

Focus Shifts to UPL
The Tax Collectors will now fly back to Kampala to turn their attention to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. URA FC is scheduled to return to domestic action this week, with their sights set on climbing the table after a rigorous warm-up in the beautiful Zanzibar Island.
