SC Villa were held to a stubborn 0-0 draw by Lugazi FC in a bruising Uganda Premier League encounter under the lights at the FUFA Stadium, Kadiba, on Friday night.
The Jogoos started on the front foot and dictated much of the tempo, but found goals hard to come by against a well-drilled Lugazi side that set up deep and defended in numbers. Villa enjoyed the bulk of possession, especially in the second half, stitching together neat passing moves, yet clear-cut chances were few and far between.
The match was frequently disrupted by injuries, particularly in the first half, with long stoppages breaking any rhythm. Lugazi were forced into an early change when Derrick Mwanje limped off injured, while several other players from both sides required treatment as the game took on a physical edge.
Lugazi’s discipline was tested as Amos Etoju and Abdul Kalanzi went into the referee’s book before the break, but they held firm to reach halftime unscathed.
After the restart, Villa intensified the pressure, introducing fresh legs in attack, but the visitors’ compact defensive block and goalkeeper Allan Igama Batali stood tall.
As the clock ticked down, the match turned into a siege on the Lugazi goal, with Villa probing relentlessly but failing to break what appeared to be an impenetrable wall. Late cautions and time management from Lugazi further slowed the tempo, ensuring the points were shared at full time.
The draw leaves SC Villa fourth on the table with 30 points, level with second-placed Entebbe UPPC and third-placed KCCA FC, while leaders Vipers remain top with 36 points. Lugazi FC stay 11th on 15 points after earning a hard-fought away draw.
Lugazi defender Richard Ayiko was named Man of the Match for his commanding display at the heart of the visitors’ defence, summing up a night where resilience trumped flair.
