Kenya Seeks perfection as Zambia hunts redemption in Group A finale

The final whistle in Sunday’s Group A clash between Kenya and Zambia will not just mark the end of the group stage, it will tell two contrasting tales of CHAN 2024.

For the Harambee Stars, already assured of a quarter-final berth, it is a chance to sharpen their credentials as title contenders and prove that their rise under Bennie McCarthy is no fluke. For Zambia, it is about pride, redemption, and leaving the tournament with dignity after a bruising campaign.

Kenya: From Underdogs to Front-Runners

Kenya’s journey in what was labelled the “Group of Death” has defied the script. Few expected them to stand above giants Morocco and DR Congo, yet seven points from three games have made McCarthy’s men the surprise pace-setters.

But the coach refuses to let his players ease off. “We’ve climbed to the top of the mountain, but the job isn’t done. To be the best, you have to beat the best—and we want to prove this run is no accident,” McCarthy said.

For his players, it’s also personal. Defender Daniel Sakari spoke with conviction about rewarding their passionate supporters:
“Every match matters, and finishing strong at home is important for us. The fans at Kasarani give us energy, and we want to give them another reason to celebrate.”

Zambia: Pride Before the Exit

The picture could not be more different for the Chipolopolo. Three defeats have ended their campaign prematurely, yet Avram Grant insists there is still something to fight for.

“Yes, this is our last game, but it’s still an opportunity,” said the former Chelsea and Ghana boss. “Our focus has been on developing players for the future. Kenya is a tough side, but we want to improve, show progress, and leave with pride.”

Captain Kelvin Kampamba struck the same note, framing the tie as a matter of respect: “We know we’ve let our fans down, but we want to bow out with a win. Kenya is strong, especially at home, but we have to show who we are.”

History Adds Edge

This will be the 35th meeting between the two nations, with Zambia boasting the upper hand historically. Yet Kenya’s victory in their last meeting, a 2-1 friendly in 2020, showed that the tide can turn.

Now, under the bright lights of the Moi International Sports Centre, the stakes are split. Kenya is chasing perfection and momentum for the knockouts; Zambia is chasing redemption and respect.
