Uganda’s dream run at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) has taken another dramatic turn, as the Cranes prepare for a heavyweight quarterfinal showdown against West African giants Senegal.
The East Africans, who broke new ground by advancing past the group stage for the first time in the tournament’s history, now face their sternest test yet in Kampala this weekend.
Senegal booked their ticket after a tense goalless draw with Sudan on the final day of Group D action at Amaan Stadium. The Lions of Teranga were forced to finish the match with ten men following a late red card to defender Mbaye Yaya Ly, but still managed to hold on. Despite ending level on five points apiece, Sudan edged the group on goal difference, leaving Senegal to settle for second place.
That outcome paired Sudan with Algeria, who came second in Group C behind Uganda. The North African clash promises to be a battle of contrasting styles, with Sudan relying on resilience and Algeria banking on experience.

Elsewhere, East Africa’s fairytale continues. Hosts Kenya, riding the wave of home support in Nairobi, will take on tournament debutants Madagascar in what is expected to be a vibrant quarterfinal under the floodlights. In Dar es Salaam, co-hosts Tanzania have drawn a tricky test against defending champions Morocco in another Friday night clash.
Meanwhile, there was heartbreak for Congo as their campaign ended with a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria. Goals from Anas Yusuf and Alimi Sikiru gave the Super Eagles pride in victory, but both sides were already eliminated before kickoff, bowing out together.
For Uganda, though, the story is only just beginning. Having already achieved history, the Cranes now stand on the cusp of rewriting it once more—this time against one of Africa’s most powerful footballing nations.
