Lugazi Look to Extend Perfect Record as Calvary Debuts in Topflight

Lugazi FC step into the 2025/26 Uganda Premier League with the burden of expectation as they host debutants Calvary FC on Friday evening. For the Leaders, this opener at the Lugazi Stadium is more than just another fixture—it is a chance to affirm their topflight ambitions after a season in which survival was their main storyline.

History leans heavily in Lugazi’s favor. In five previous encounters across the Big League and the Uganda Cup, Calvary have never managed a point against the Leaders. The most recent meeting, a 2-0 away win in Yumbe during this year’s Uganda Cup, only underlined the gulf between the two sides. Yet this will be the first time the pair face off at the highest level, giving Calvary an opportunity to test their mettle against familiar tormentors on a bigger stage.

Lugazi’s Atube Rogers

Lugazi have spent their pre-season reshaping the squad, bringing in 13 new players to provide the firepower they often lacked last term. The arrivals of creative midfielder David Bagoole and striker Alfred Leku stand out, and both are expected to play central roles as the club looks to turn attractive football into consistent goals.

Confidence within the camp is high. The coaching duo of Steven Bogere and Francis Mugerwa insist their side is stronger, sharper, and ready to win matches rather than merely compete. Captain Richard Ayiko echoed the optimism, stressing the importance of victory on opening day to “set the right track” for the season ahead.

For Calvary, this is uncharted territory. Fresh from lifting the FUFA Big League title in June, they arrive with momentum but also the reality of facing an opponent who has always had the upper hand. A strong performance in Lugazi would not only announce their arrival in the UPL but also help bury the weight of a lopsided head-to-head record.

As the whistle blows on Friday evening, Lugazi carry the weight of history, but Calvary carry the hunger of a newcomer desperate to belong. One side seeks continuity of dominance; the other seeks a breakthrough. The UPL’s newest chapter begins with that contrast firmly at its heart.
