Uganda’s Rugby Cranes 7s are set for an injection of fresh talent as a new generation of players earns its place on the national stage ahead of this weekend’s 2025 Safari 7s in Nairobi.

After an electrifying National 7s series that showcased the depth of local talent, head coach Tolbert Onyango has turned to emerging stars who impressed throughout the season. The likes of Jeremiah Ojambo, Fat Moses Watmon, Ivan Bulima, Shakim Ssembusi, and Julius Oyuk headline a youthful contingent that has earned its chance to shine in national colors.

The selection reflects Uganda’s continued emphasis on blending youth with experience as the Cranes seek to rebuild and strengthen their 7s setup ahead of a packed international calendar.

Among the notable inclusions, Ivan Bulima, the standout playmaker from Walukuba Barbarians, finally steps up to the continental stage after orchestrating his club’s dominant displays in the local circuit. Ssembusi, already capped in the 15s setup, will now make his long-awaited 7s debut, while Oyuk’s rapid rise at Heathens Rugby Club has been rewarded with a senior call-up.

Team captain Karim Arinaitwe, the longest-serving member of the side, will lead a squad that also features seasoned campaigners Allan Olango and Roy Kizito, whose experience will be crucial when Uganda faces off with top-tier regional rivals at Nyayo Stadium from Friday to Sunday.

The revamped squad’s energy and balance between youthful exuberance and veteran guidance have sparked optimism that Uganda can make a deep run in Nairobi.
